Home Office Setup: What to Buy First, Second and Never

Home office advice tends to be a shopping list. This is a prioritisation, based on which purchases change how well you work and which just change how the room looks.

Buy first: the four that change your output

ItemWhy it comes first
ChairYou sit in it for thousands of hours. A cheap chair costs you in back pain and lost focus.
Monitor at eye heightLaptop screens force your neck down. Raising it is the highest-return change available, and a stand is enough.
Desk at the right heightElbows at roughly 90°, feet flat. Nothing expensive required — just correct.
Lighting that avoids glarePlace the light source to the side, not behind you (glare on screen) or in front (glare in eyes).

Buy second: the improvements

Consider carefully

⚠️ Where people waste money

The test for any purchase: will this change what I can do, or only how the room looks? Spend on the first category in order, and only buy the second when the first is complete.
