Airport Car Rental: What to Do at the Counter (and What to Refuse)

The rental counter is designed to sell extras. Not maliciously — it is simply the highest-margin moment in the transaction. Knowing the sequence protects your money and your deposit.

Before you get to the counter

At the counter: the four questions

  1. "What is the total including all mandatory charges?" — forces the real number out early.
  2. "Which of these are optional?" — separates insurance and extras from required fees.
  3. "What is the fuel policy?" — full-to-full is the one you want.
  4. "What is the deposit hold?" — a credit card hold, not a charge, but it affects your available limit.

Decline politely and firmly. "I'm covered already, thank you" ends most upsell attempts. Repeating it calmly works better than arguing about terms.
